No names being added to police officer memorial
Thursday, May 5, 2005

The Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Department of Homeland Security are holding a ceremony today to honor the law enforcement officers who have been killed while serving Indian Country.

The Indian Country Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial in Artesia, New Mexico, is a tribute to the tribal and federal law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. It currently contains 86 names, some going as far back as the late 1800s.

For only the second year in its history, no new names are being added to the memorial. The last two names were added during the 2004 ceremony.

Pat Ragsdale, the director of the BIA, is scheduled to give the keynote at today's event. It takes place at the U.S. Indian Police Academy, which is now part of Homeland Security.
