An ad running on Ottawa University's campus newspaper this week calls on the school to get rid of its 81-year-old "Braves" mascot.
Religious Americans Against "Indian" Nicknames and Logos sought to place the ad more than two months ago, The Topeka Capital-Journal. But school officials wouldn't let The Campus paper run the ad until an educational forum on the mascot was held.
Local American Indian Movement activists say the school's "Giego" mascot is offensive. Giego is said to represent the "spirit" of the Ottawa Tribe. A second mascot, "Gibby," is an otter, the tribe's sacred animal.
