About 200 Native students in northern California met last week to discuss sovereignty, politics, the law and how to succeed in the tribal and non-tribal worlds.
Rachel Provolt and Emmilee Risling, sophomores at McKinleyville High School organized the "Success in Both Worlds" conference. They presented a video they made about tribal sovereignty, which was the theme of this year's event.
Clifford Lyle Marshall, the chairman of the Hoopa Valley Tribe, addressed the students. He said sovereignty is "the idea that you're part of something greater than yourself," The Eureka Times-Standard reported.
