Montana tribe to take over law enforcement from BIA

The Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana is moving forward with efforts to take over law enforcement duties from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The tribal council voted unanimously to seek a self-determination contract for law enforcement. President Eugene Little Coyote said the goal is more accountability.

The tribe is starting the process with a request for information on descriptions and salaries for positions related to law enforcement. A contract will then be prepared.
