Pope John Paul II is in "very grave" condition, the Vatican confirmed while later denying reports that he has fallen into a coma.
The pope, 84, suffered heart failure on Thursday set off by a urinary tract infection. He has been in high fever in recent days and was visibly weakened during Easter ceremonies.
Doctors had recently inserted a feeding tube to ensure the pope was being nourished.
