Tributes poured out for Fritz Scholder, the late Luiseno artist who defied stereotypes and challenged notions of Indian art.
A memorial at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, drew numerous friends, family, colleagues and students. They praised Scholder as a visionary who advanced the Indian art movement, first with unusual portrayals of Indian subjects, and later with images of the pyramids in Egypt and vampires.
Scholder died February 10 in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he lived. He was 67.
