Students and professors say lack of support and funding is to blame for the cancellation of the 16th annual University of Iowa Powwow.

Quanah Walker, 25, a graduate student and co-chairman of the American Indian Student Association, said there aren't enough Native students around to organize the event. The association is $8,500 in debt and needs more funds, said Walker, a member of the Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa.

Jacki Rand, an assistant professor of history and American Indian and Native studies and a member of the Choctaw Nation, said the real issue is the lack of Native student recruitment. As of fall 2004, 141 Natives were enrolled at UI out of 29,745 students.
