The Baldwin family in Chilton, Wisconsin, is proud to have Moses Stanton, a Black and Narragansett man who founded Chilton, as an ancestor.
Mark Baldwin and his daughter Rachel, 10, are direct descendants of Stanton, a minister who founded Chilton after leaving Rhode Island in the 1840s. Stanton whose mother was Narragansett and whose father was Black, was part of the Brothertown Indians who were relocated by the federal government to Wisconsin.
Stanton, whose first and second wives were Indian, played a role in the Underground Railroad.
He helped slaves escape to Canada, the Baldwins say. He died in 1862 in an accident.
Today, the Brothertown Indian Nation is made up of the descendants of the Narragansetts, Pequots and Mohegans who left New England in the 1800s.
