Editorial: Indian center in Milwaukee a good idea

"In an editorial earlier this month in which we strongly opposed plans to move the USS Des Moines to Milwaukee, we pointed out that there already are far too many proposals to build or place things on this precious, mostly undeveloped stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline.

But there are exceptions and one of them is a worthy proposal by an American Indian group to convert a building already on the lakefront into an education and cultural center. We're talking about the abandoned Coast Guard station on N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, which has been allowed to become an eyesore through neglect even though it's on the National Register of Historic Places.

Unfortunately, the landlord, Milwaukee County, does not have the money to restore this 1916 structure, one of only two Prairie-style Coast Guard stations in the world. Fortunately, the American Indian group, HONOR, is ready to step forward."
