Indian women in Minnesota among state's poorest

Indian women in Minnesota are among the state's poorest, according to a new study by the Women's Foundation of Minnesota.

Based on data from the 2000 U.S. Census, the foundation reported that 26.3 percent of Indian women are poor. This was slightly higher than the national rate of 25.0 percent.

Among families headed by a single Indian mother, the poverty rate rose to 36.6 percent. This was lower than the national rate.

On average, Indian women in the state earn $26,500 a year, which is lower than the national average. Native women only earn 60 percent of what white men earn.
