The chairwoman of the Tohono O'odham Nation of Arizona says a new voter identification proposal will hurt tribal members.
The state plans to require proof of citizenship to register to vote and certain forms of identification to vote at polling places. The changes are in response to Proposition 200, an anti-immigrant initiative approved by voters last November.
O'odham Chairwoman Vivian Juan-Sanders says the plan will deny Indians the right to vote because many lack identification. Some Tohono O'odhams also lack proof they were born in the U.S.
