A young member of the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island says she and her friends were denied entry to her high school's dance because of their race.
Na'Keesha Brown, a junior at Chariho High, said school officials kept citing reasons why members of her group, all young tribal members, couldn't get into the dance. "When one didn't work, they would come up with a second," she told The Chariho Times. "You could easily see it wasn't about what they were saying -- it was racist."
School officials say the group was denied entry for a number of reasons, including arriving too late and failing to abide by the dress code. Tribal leaders are seeking a meeting to discuss the incident.
