Column: Indian woman recounts early years

"Her life was dictated by bugles, calling her for classes, work, lunch, supper, evening activities.

"They were the very calls used by the buglers of the United States Cavalry when they chased our grandparents across the plains, mountains, swamps and deserts on the long walks in the forts of Laramie, Kearny and Defiance.

"Now decades later, little Indian children's lives were dictated by these same bugle calls."

So writes EdNah New Rider Weber, in her heartbreaking "Rattlesnake Mesa," which recounts her early life growing up on the Navajo Reservation - and her time spent at Phoenix Indian School."
