Obituary: Richard Harrison, Osage, NIH official


Richard Harrison, a member of the Osage Nation of Oklahoma who overcame alcoholism to become an expert on substance abuse among Native Americans, died on January 19. He was 65.

Harrison spent much of his career in the health field. He ran an Indian youth alcoholism program and worked at the Indian Health Service before joining the National Institutes of Health, where he most recently served as head of contracts for the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Harrison was proud of his Osage heritage and belonged to several Indian and professional organizations.
