Crow Tribe can negotiate tobacco tax compact

The Crow Tribe of Montana has authorized a tax on the sale of tobacco, clearing the way for a compact with the state.

The compact would allow the tribe to share in tax revenues collected on the sale of cigarettes to Indian and non-Indian consumers. Currently, the tribe receives none of the state's $1.70 tax.

The deal could bring in an $1.5 million a year for the tribe.
