The Pine Creek First Nation in Manitoba has elected a new chief who is not a band member and is not considered Indian under Canadian law.
Billy Joe Delaronde is Metis and a former president of the Manitoba M�tis Federation. He was chosen over five other candidates.
Even though Metis people are not recognized as Indians,
Chris Henderson, head of the Southern Chiefs Organization, says the federal Indian Act allows non-members to run for tribal office.
