A startup firm with Indian backing is seeking to bring telephone service to 2,500 homes on the Navajo Nation.
Sacred Wind Communications will install a wireless system in hopes of avoiding high costs associated with land lines. In rural areas of the reservation, land lines can cost up to $100,000.
The Navajo Nation has one of the lowest telephone service usage rates in the entire country. Only about 37 percent of homes have service, according to the Federal Communications Commission.
