California Republican to head House Appropriations

Rep. Jerry Lewis, a Republican from California, has been chosen as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.

Lewis, 70, was selected over Reps. Ralph Regula (Ohio) and Harold Rogers (Kentucky), according to news reports. The selection process was reportedly competitive with hopes of ensuring the incoming chairman will cooperate with House leaders and the White House.

The committee oversees all appropriations bills, including the one for Interior. The Interior subcommittee will still be chaired by Rep. Charles Taylor (R-Mississippi).
