The Interamerican Court of Human Rights has ordered the government of Guatemala to pay $7.9 million (US) to the survivors of massacre of a Mayan Indian village.
In 1982, government soldiers entered the village of Plan de Sanchez, raped the women and herded residents into a building that was blown up. A total of 286 people were killed.
The court said the government must pay 25,000 to each of 317 massacre survivors, plus legal costs. The judgment was the largest in the court's history.
