Native housing authority under investigation

A Native housing authority in Manitoba is under investigation for alleged nepotism and mismanagement.

Aiyawin Corporation provides government-subsidized housing for low-income and elderly Natives in Winnipeg. The corporation receives about $2 million (Canadian) a year to help pay for mortgages and property taxes.

A former employee says Aiyawin pays an outrageous amount of money to the brother of the general manager for renovations. That same brother is living in Aiyawin housing, skipping a four-year long wait.

Others say Aiyawin has been mismanaging money for several years. Manitoba Housing has brought in an auditor to review the books.
