The University of New Mexico has enrolled 1,500 Indian students and is trying to recruit more.
The school's American Indian Student Services recently held American Indian Student Day. About 800 Indian high school students toured the campus, attended seminars and met with current UNM students.
Minority freshmen now make up slightly over 50 percent of the entire class for the first time in history. But fewer minority students return to school the following year. Only 63 percent of Indian freshmen re-enrolled this year compared to 76 for white non-Hispanics.
