The state of Oklahoma recognized the achievements of Natives and non-Natives at the official Native American Heritage Celebration on Monday.

Cinda Hughes, a member of the Kiowa Tribe, was honored for her role as Ms. Wheelchair America and Ms. Wheelchair Oklahoma. She raised awareness of issues facing disabled people.

The Spirit of Oklahoma Award was given to cousins Joe Dent and Joan Aitson. Descendants of the Otoe warrior Big Ax, they donated a document signed by explorers Lewis and Clark in 1804.

Regina Riley, who is non-Native, was also recognized. She helped Davenport Schools in Lincoln County build a running and jogging track for Indian students.

Geri Wisner-Foley, a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation, gave the keynote. She is the tribe's ambassador to the United Nations.
