The Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a $32,000 grant to the New England Board of Higher Education to study the creation of a college that will serve Eastern tribes.
The grant will be carried out in part by the United South and Eastern Tribes (USET), which represents more than 20 tribes from Florida to Maine. One of USET's long-term goals is to create an inter-tribal college east of the Mississippi.
The college would be a first for the East, where tribes are spread out over a larger territory. In the West, there are 32 tribal colleges.
