New Catawba leaders hope infighting will end

Two new council members for the Catawba Nation of South Carolina are hopeful that a new era of cooperation will rid the tribe of infighting that has festered for nearly a decade.

The tribe gained federal recognition through an act of Congress in 1993. But disputes kept tribal members from electing a new council and from adopting a new constitution.

A run-off held last month finally saw the addition of Thomas "Butch" Sanders and Jason Harris to the tribal council. They say they hope to put old differences aside.
