Wyoming tribes seek formal state-tribal policy

Leaders of Wyoming's two tribes urged lawmakers on Monday to develop a formal state-tribal policy.

The State Legislature created a tribal liaison to work with the Northern Arapaho Tribe and the Eastern Shoshone Tribe. Both tribes are based on the Wind River Reservation.

Tribal leaders gave the liaison position a mixed review in testimony to the Legislature's Select Committee on Tribal Relations. Ivan Posey, who held the position, said he found it hard to work without a formal policy.

Gov. Dave Freudenthal (D) ended the position because the Northern Arapaho Tribe couldn't find $25,000 to share the $100,000 yearly cost.
