The Council of Elders at Montana State University in Bozeman held its first meeting on Thursday.
The council includes representatives of seven Montana tribes. The group will advise MSU President Geoff Gamble on Indian issues.
The school is trying to attract more Native students. Officials are raising money for a new Native American Center and $2 million for scholarships.
Native students said they still experience racism on campus. Recently, a teepee outside the American Indian Council Resource Center was defaced with vulgarities.
