Bush issues American Indian Heritage proclamation

President Bush issued a proclamation declaring November as National American Indian Heritage Month on Thursday.

The proclamation praises the National Museum of the American Indian. "Through exhibits documenting past and present achievements and hopes for the future, it will introduce generations of visitors to the strong and living traditions of Native Americans," it states. First Lady Laura Bush visited the museum yesterday on her birthday and ate at the Mitsitam Cafe.

Bush also touts his record on Indian issues. He says he spent $1.1 billion to fix Bureau of Indian Affairs schools, signed an executive order on Indian education and an executive memorandum on government-to-government consultation.

Past presidents have issued similar proclamations.
