Cherokee Nation vows to work with Senator Coburn

The Cherokee Nation plans to work with Republican Coburn despite opposing his successful bid for U.S. Senate, a spokesperson says.

Tribal leaders criticized Coburn for remarks he made about Cherokees. Coburn said they weren't "real" Indians.

Cherokee Nation spokesperson Mike Miller tells The Native American Times that Coburn's 12-point victory over Rep. Brad Carson (D), a Cherokee tribal member, doesn't mean voters embrace those views. Miller says Coburn "has recanted some of his statements regarding treaties."

Coburn is a former Congressman.
