The leader of a New Mexico tribe kept polls on the reservation closed on Tuesday in order to observe a religious holiday, The Albuquerque Journal reports.
Santo Domingo Pueblo Gov. Sisto Quintana personally shut the polls and said county officials and election observers from the Department of Justice would not be allowed to enter the reservation. He said the tribe was marking All Souls Day.
The polls finally opened at 5 pm and a long line was reported. The reservation has 748 registered voters, the overwhelming majority of whom are Indian and registered Democrats.
Santo Domingo Pueblo is located in Sandoval County. According to the New Mexico Secretary of State, President George W. Bush won the county by 1,414 votes with all but one precinct reporting. Bush is currently leading the state by more than 13,000 votes.
The population of the Pueblo is 2,550, based on the 2000 Census, with the overwhelming majority being Indian.
