Pueblo designer takes pottery, fashion to new heights

Works by Virgil Ortiz, an artist from Cochiti Pueblo in New Mexico, are on display in a new exhibit at the Heard Museum in Arizona.

Ortiz grew up in a family of potters. He blends traditional styles with modern ones to create unusual award-winning pieces.

Ortiz also puts his designs on clothes. He worked with Donna Karan on a line of women's clothing and accessories and now has his own brand. He debuted his handbags and haute couture at the Santa Fe Indian Market in August. Some of the proceeds from his handbags are going to support the New Mexico Statuary Hall Commission's efforts to put a statue of Pope, a Pueblo leader, in Washington, D.C.
