A once-respected elder of the Burns-Paiute Tribe of Oregon has been sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison for sexually assaulting a girl.
Herbert Warren Hawley, 68, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated sexual abuse in federal court and first-degree sexual abuse in state court. He will serve his time in state prison.
Hawley abused a 9-year-old girl, authorities said. One incident took place at a church Hawley and the girl attended, authorities said.
