The Citizen Potawatomi Nation of Oklahoma held its first Healing to Wellness Camp to show how traditional methods can help treatment and recovery of substance abuse.
The keynote speaker was Don Coyhis, founder of White Bison Inc. Coyhis is an advocate of the "wellbriety" movement, which focuses on healing the whole person, not just the problem.
The tribe's health department is incorporating the method in its treatment program. Sweat lodges, talking circles and a teepee are offered to connect people to their culture.
