The former executive director for the Catawba Nation of South Carolina was indicted on Wednesday for allegedly stealing more than $10,000 from the tribe.

Wanda George Warren, 43, faces five years in jail and a $250,000 fine for the alleged theft. The charges stem from reimbursements for trips she made on behalf of the tribe, said her lawyer.

Warren, a tribal member and daughter of Assistant Chief Evans "Buck" George, recently resigned from her position and held a variety of positions within the tribal government. The tribe's lawyer said he was shocked to learn of the indictment. But a critic said it was indicative of the tribe's financial woes.

The tribe is currently engaged in a fight with the state over gaming rights. Tribal members are also going to the polls to elect a new council and constitution. According to The Rock Hill Herald, this is the 10th time in two years that a constitution has been before voters.
