Developers looking for retail, office or hotel space are finding reservations increasingly attractive due to low tax rates and limited regulation.
With options limited in urban areas, developers turned to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community near Scottsdale, Arizona, for a major business and retail park. Leases were negotiated with dozens of individual Indians for a $400 million project.
The Tulalip Tribes of Washington and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in California have similar deals that benefit the tribe and tribal members. The Tulalip Reservation hosts retail space while Agua Caliente members own prime land in Palm Springs.
