A new program starting on two Arizona reservations tomorrow will supply Indian students with healthy snacks.
The Department of Agriculture is paying for fruits and vegetables at schools on the Tohono O'odham Reservation and on the Gila River Reservation. The tribes were selected for the $9 million program due to high rates of diabetes.
Data from the state shows that Arizona Indians die from diabetes at a rate of 81 per 100,000, compared to 22 per 100,000 for the rest of the state population.
