Manitoba won't recognize Metis Nation hunting cards

The government of Manitoba will not recognize hunting cards issued to Metis hunters and will arrest anyone who attempts to hunt under Metis rules.

The Manitoba Mtis Federation began issuing the cards last week. Hunters are asked to abide by hunting regulations the federation recently adopted.

But the province says the federation is jumping the gun. The government plans to make its own rules that it says Metis hunters have to follow or face arrest.

Canada's Supreme Court ruled last year that Metis have aboriginal hunting and fishing rights.
