St. Regis Mohawk Tribe objects to IRS gas raids

The chief of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York says the IRS infringed on its sovereignty by seizing gas tankers bound for the reservation.

The IRS claims businesses on the reservation are failing to pay a federal excise tax on gas imported from Canada. Armed agents seized trucks and gasoline and will auction them off to pay the alleged tax debt. An estimated $80 million is allegedly owed.

Randy Jock, a gas station owner, says paying the tax will result in lost jobs. The tribe imposes its own four-cent per gallon tax.
