Wintu Tribe's ceremony will challenge dam proposal

Members of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe of California say the raising of the Shasta Dam will destroy their sacred sites.

In protest of the plan, the tribe will perform a ceremony that hasn't been held in more than 100 years. Tribal members received permission to hold the war dance at Shasta Dam over four days next month.

Shasta Dam officials are considering raising the dam by at least 6 1/2 feet and as high as 200 feet. The increase will store water for at least 1.1 million people in one year.
