Members of the Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine will go to the polls August 17 to decide on a $300 million liquid natural gas terminal on tribal land.
Tribal leaders say the project will create jobs and revenue. They signed an agreement with Quoddy Bay LLC of Tulsa, Oklahome, to build on 42 acres of the Pleasant Point Reservation, also known as Sipayik.
Some tribal members oppose the proposal, fearing it will harm the environment. The terminal was rejected by several other Maine communities before the company turned to the tribe.
