Leaders of Washington tribes took part in a rally against the Bush administration's proposed rollback of the roadless forest rule on Tuesday.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer did not say which tribes joined the protest. But the Skokomish, Port Gamble S'Klallam, Jamestown S'Klallam, and Lower Elwha Klallam tribes had supported the Clinton administration's version of the rule, which limited road building on already roadless areas of national forests. The tribes are signatories to the Point No Point Treaty.
The Department of Agriculture is planning to drop the rule entirely by leaving it up to states to seek protections for already roadless areas.
