A bill to ban public schools from using the name "Redskins" failed by a 17-12 vote on Thursday.
The measure fell four votes short of the majority needed for passage. Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg (D), its sponsor, said she was confident it would pass when brought up again at a later session.
The bill originally was meant to ban all Indian themed mascots and names but was scaled back in response to complaints.
