Frank LaMere, a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska and a long-time Democratic activist, says Indian participation in the national party will only go up.

LaMere is one of four Indians on the Democratic National Committee. That's a step up from 1988, when there were none.

LaMere said the goal is to increase that number to nine by 2008. That would give the Native American Caucus "official" status with a seat on the party's executive committee.

"I want to challenge our Democratic people in the states so that we can get nine," he told The Navajo Times.
