South Dakota attorney general Larry Long said there was no evidence of abuse at a controversial hog farm on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation.

Humane Farming Association, which opposes the farm, alleged the animals were being mistreated. The group published pictures in two newspapers of dead and injured animals.

Based on the complain, Long sent a team to the Sun Prairie farm but said there was nothing to report. He also said he would not have been able to charge any Indian employees of abuse because he has no jurisdiction over them. He said he would have jurisdiction over non-Indian employees or the company itself.

Sun Prairie's lease for the farm was the subject of a lengthy court battle. The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals invalidated it because the tribal council no longer wanted the farm on the reservation. The company wants to expand the operation, which would be the largest of its kind in Indian Country.
