The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is waiting federal approval of changes to the tribal constitution that were adopted in 2003.
The tribe voted to remove a provision that requires the Bureau of Indian Affairs to approve every changes to the constitution. Many tribal constitutions have a similar provision.
The tribe also voted to create a delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives. Treaties with the U.S. allow a Cherokee delegate, according to the new constitution.
