Cherokee couple fights tribe's same-sex marriage ban

A Cherokee Nation couple denied the right to marry plans to challenge the tribe's law banning same-sex marriages.

The lesbian couple obtained a marriage license from a tribal court clerk but the tribe won't accept it. The women will fight the tribe in tribal court, said a Cherokee activist working with them.

The activist, David Cornsilk, also said the couple will try to get the marriage recognized by the state of Oklahoma even though the state bans same-sex marriages. Cornsilk said the state is obligated to recognize the decisions of a tribal court.
