Commissioners in Redwood County, Minnesota, rejected a plan to return an historic federal site to the Lower Sioux Tribe.
The state is closing the 242-acre Lower Sioux Agency Historic Site to save money. The site was the location of the Lower Sioux Agency and the first battle the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War.
The agency was created after treaties significantly reduced the Dakota homeland.
