Indian voter group had ties to Democrat-leaning PAC

An Indian voting rights group that has criticized the way South Dakota's recent election was handled had ties to a defunct political action committee that gave money to the state's Democrats.

Four Directions PAC was dissolved earlier this year. It gave more than $220,000 to the state Democratic Party.

Some of the people who were involved in the PAC are also involved in the Four Directions Committee, the group's executive director says. Frank LaMere, a Winnebago tribal member who was the treasurer for the PAC, says the PAC "outlived its usefulness."

Four Directions Committee helped increase voter turnout on South Dakota reservations two- to thee-fold. The group hopes to replicate the success elsewhere.
