A Cherokee Nation couple who tried to file their marriage license in tribal court were rejected on Tuesday because they are lesbian.
Kathy Reynolds and Dawn McKinley obtained a marriage license from the tribe and were married in a May 18 ceremony. But news of the action sent tribal officials scurrying to ensure it never happens again.
The Cherokee Nation council finally voted 15-0 Monday night to ban same-sex marriages.
