The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho filed suit on Monday to force the release of 200,000 young salmon this year.
The state of Washington has delayed the release of the salmon until 2005. The tribe says a court order requires release this year.
The state was asked to delay the release by the federal Bonneville Power Administration. But the tribe's lawsuit promoted state officials to agree to release the salmon this month.
