Sen. Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota) is asking South Dakota Secretary of State Chris Nelson to hold public hearings on problems Indian voters encountered during the June 1 election.
In a letter, Daschle said news and other reports indicated that Indian voters were treated differently. Most of the problems stemmed from a state law requiring all voters to show photo identification or sign an affidavit.
Daschle said hearings should be held in Indian Country. He also wants more training of poll workers for the November election in which he faces a crucial race against Republican John Thune.
